Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Dogs are not only man’s best friend, but also man’s most alive accessory. Walk down Lincoln Road and you see an assortment of unnatural relationships people have with their four-legged beast companions.
Why are we so in love with our canine pets? Mark Derr, a Miami Beach resident, asks this question in How the Dog Became the Dog. He explores the ways in which we different creatures are drawn to each other. Derr, likely inspired by life on SoBe where tiny dogs rule the streets from underneath armpits, looks at the historical, biological, and cultural reasons we’re so bound to our pups.
In honor of Derr’s upcoming Books and Books appearance, we’ve put together a list of five of the more creepy things we do and buy for our dogs that might inspire you for the holidays.
This is a massage glove that you can use to give your furry pal a good rubbing. Sure, you can’t afford health insurance for yourself, but your dog’s stressed, so slap on one of these babies and get to work. You can also get to Exhale Spa where “doga” is on the menu. Like yoga. When in downward facing dog with your dog, you can have some real breakthroughs — like figuring out that your pet has become your owner.
