When Amy Herzog’s 4000 Miles hit the Miami stage last year, it won over critics with its deft treatment of issues such as aging and mortality — angsty matters galore. But they’re nothing compared to the topics broached by the playwright’s most recent play to hit South Florida. In The Great God Pan, Jamie, a young journalist, is living a pretty carefree life — until a childhood friend confesses that Jamie might have been a victim of sexual abuse as a child.
Jamie doesn’t remember any abuse in his childhood and initially dismisses the allegations. But the more he examines his life, the more he wonders: Have I forgotten? Have I blocked it? Has my life, my personality, my very sense of self been shaped by an event I don’t even recall?
Heavy stuff. But Herzog’s track record with difficult subject matters suggests this will be an enjoyable, if intense, work on the stage.
