You’d never know her body was covered in dark purple bruises and cherry-red abrasions (thanks to her conservative office attire) but your office’s friendly HR rep moonlights as Chesty McBruiser, a hard-core, fun-loving derby girl who can block and jam with the best of them. Though Miami doesn’t have its own roller derby team, tough ladies from Dade, Broward, and West Palm congregate as the Gold Coast Derby Grrls, practicing three times a week at their home base in Fort Lauderdale.
But this Saturday, the Grrls will take on Atlanta’s Sake Tuyas at the Doral Park Country Club, choosing a 305 venue to appease Miami fans and players. With a 3-1 record, the Derby Grrls are vying for a spot in the major league of roller derby, WFTDA. At the end of June, our grrls-on-wheels will head to the East Coast Derby Extravaganza in Philly to show they can take down the knuckle-cracking ladies of the majors.
