The Cannes Film Festival is the ideal gathering for movie buffs. It has become a significant showcase for European films and welcomes A-list stars such as Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and Penelope Cruz every year. However, the festival takes place in France and is invitation-only, so unless you have a famous right leg or a megaton of cash to buy your way in, you won’t be experiencing it firsthand anytime soon. But Miami Beach Cinematheque (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) is offering the next best thing: its “Best of Cannes” series. It kicks off Friday with The Kid With a Bike, last year’s Grand Prix winner. Written and directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Belgian brothers who’ve cleaned up at Cannes since their first Palm d’Or in 1999 for Rosetta, the film tells the story of troubled 11-year-old Cyril. After his father abandons him, Cyril insists on finding his bicycle, reasoning that his father cared enough about him not to sell it. While on his search, he meets a woman who becomes determined to help him. The film deals with betrayal and love, and focuses on a child who is learning to overcome the obstacles that have been thrown his way.
