Other cities drop balls at midnight on New Year’s Eve. But in Miami, we drop a giant neon orange. That’s right, we tropical folks lust for an over-the-top fireworks display and laser show. Every December 31, hordes of South Floridians head to Bayfront Park to watch the big fruit in the sky fall at 12 a.m. sharp. They yell louder than any other citizens of the world and count down till the old year has been laid to rest.
Hotel InterContinental Miami will ring the Big Orange tradition into its 25th year. The City of Miami will post the 35-foot sphere 400 feet above the hotel at 6 p.m., and folks will gathering after dark with blankets and bubbly. This year, on the same space of earth, Ludacris and Mike Posner will battle it out as part of Red Bull’s free Soundclash show. For fancier Miamians, there’s a lavish NYE buffet dinner from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Indigo Restaurant inside the hotel to prepare for the big moment when the orange falls.
