In novelist Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking, a memoir about grieving, the protagonist receives a letter from a friend that somehow intuitively describes everything she feels about the death of her mother. The scene is akin to an arty game called the exquisite corpse, in which one player shares a thought on a piece of paper and passes it to the next player, who adds another thought based on the first. This grown-up version of playground dialogue is the basis of Dislodged, a video collaboration between photographer Elizabeth Cerejido and poet Mia Leonin, in which both women find common experiences in the deaths of their mothers.
The video forms part of “Woman to Woman,” a project at Bakehouse Art Complex that exhibits the collaborative work of ten established female artists from Miami. Each artist was selected and given a choice of another woman to work with; the result is five works in various media in visual conversation with each other.
