Something like 90 percent of all Internet traffic is generated by searches for porn, so it’s no surprise that New Zealand indie band the Naked and Famous gets so much web traffic from organic search hits. Sure, they’ve displayed uncanny pop ability since starting out at art school in Auckland in 2008. They played tons of live shows, put out independent records, launched their own label, recorded their own music, and filmed breakout videos that got them noticed by the BBC and their country’s People’s Choice Awards. But all of that attention means nothing compared to getting music placements on American television. So how did their songs end up on Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and The Vampire Diaries? There’s only one explanation: Network executives spend inordinate amounts of time watching dirty movies online and writing off the business expense as market research on how to screw over consumers.
The band’s song “Punching in a Dream” also ended up on the soundtrack to Kony 2012, now sitting on 80 million views. So when the Naked and Famous play Grand Central Friday at 8 p.m., you’ll actually be able to watch one of the most famous bands in the world today, even though they’ll (probably) have all their clothes on.
