Whether it’s a personal choice or the result of external circumstances, being car-free in Miami is notoriously difficult. Though some recent developments — like the Bus Rapid Transit system that debuted this week — are encouraging, public transportation options have been routinely passed over in favor of highway contruction in South Florida historically.
One rare exception to the rule is the popular Coral Gables Trolley, the free commuting option which launched in 2003 and averages more than 1 million passengers each year. For years, the trolley system has operated two routes, on Ponce de Leon and Grand Ave. Now, that service is expanding.
This week, the City of Coral Gables announced it will operate a new Southern Loop Trolley route as part of of a one-year pilot program funded in part by the Florida Department of Transportation. The service launches Monday, November 3.
Like one of its existing routes, the new, free trolley will also run along Ponce de Leon. It will also, however, extend service from the Douglas Road Metrorail Station to Red Road, connecting UM students to social hubs like the Underline and Merrick Park, as well as medical offices and other community services.
“The Southern Loop Trolley offers residents, students and visitors a no-cost, accessible and convenient transportation option that connects directly with Metrorail and the city’s two existing trolley routes,” the city said in a statement announcing the new route. “The pilot reflects Coral Gables’ commitment to innovation, connection and accessibility, enhancing mobility while supporting the City Beautiful’s vision for a more sustainable and connected community.”
Commuters who ride to the end of the line will also have access to downtown South Miami and Sunset Place, just a few minutes’ walking distance from the Red Road stop. The timing is slightly unfortunate — the mall is expected to be torn down next year. But for now, UM students and Coral Gables and South Miami residents can take advantage of another car-free commuting option to the mall’s anchor Barnes & Noble store and AMC Theater.
The city says it will “evaluate ridership data and collect community feedback to determine whether to continue the route beyond the pilot period.” Should the pilot program be extended, students and residents will have easy access to the foodie and retail “village” expected to replace the largely vacant mall.
