With Milk and Brokeback Mountain doing so well in multiplexes, maybe LGBT films have gotten too mainstream for you. Enter the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, which begins this Friday. It opens with a screening of I Killed My Mother, a Canadian dramedy about a gay teenager who conflicts with his mama. In addition to the film’s three Cannes awards, festival director Kareem Tabsch says he chose it to open the festival because it had an infectious, youthful energy. The creation of a 19-year-old filmmaker, I Killed My Mother screens at the Gusman Center at 7:30 p.m. Cap off the screening with the opening-night party at the Calix Gustav Gallery.
Later in the week, see Bear Nation, a Kevin Smith-produced film about the hypermasculine subculture. Other documentaries include the Florida premiere of Stonewall Uprising and another that chronicles a year in the life of gay icon Joan Rivers. (When it screened at Sundance, audiences gasped at the sight of Rivers sans makeup.) On Saturday, Mindy Cohn (AKA Natalie from The Facts of Life) will attend the screening of her film Violent Tendencies. And on Sunday, catch The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, which features yodeling, country-Western-singing lesbians from New Zealand. The festival runs through May 2.
