“There aren’t a lot of places [in Miami] to play jazz, so when I’m in town, it’s always good to perform local gigs,” says Philadelphia-born Nicole Henry. With frequent appearances at venues around the globe, Henry doesn’t have many chances to showcase her deep, soulful voice to the local faithful, except for her regular gigs in rooms such as the Van Dyke or the Jazziz Bistro. But this Tuesday, she will take on the News Lounge to show comers old and new the tricks she’s learned singing professionally over the past decade.
According to Henry, settling in Miami was a natural choice for her. “I went to college here, and three years after that, I decided to pursue a full-time singing career,” she explains. “And as I developed a love for jazz, I found a receptive audience here.” Catch songs from her last album of standards, The Very Thought of You, along with funkier fare from the album she’s working on.
