Since 1989 El Redondel (The Circle) has thrilled thousands of children in Buenos Aires and around the world with its unique blend of comedy, dance, and outdoor theater. This year the Argentine troupe makes its debut at the International Hispanic Theater Festival with a performance for kids to celebrate International Children’s Day. El Redondel marks the event by bringing the Latin American tradition of street theater to South Florida. The troupe combines movement and music with spectacular inflatable objects that make immediate impressions among young audiences with their striking colors, larger-than-life dimensions, and weird and wacky shapes. Once the objects are brought to life, the performers make them collide, fuse, invade, attract, and repel one another. The antics give rise to contorted, playful, and often hilarious situations. The authors and directors of the work, Marta Lantermo and Patricia Dorin, will offer a movement workshop just for kids following the performance. El Redondel performs at International Children’s Day at 5:00 p.m. at Miami-Dade Community College Homestead Campus, 500 College Terr., Homestead. A second show is scheduled at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Miami-Dade Community College Inter-American Campus, 627 SW 27th Ave. Admission is free. Kids create collages and learn to sign
As part of its free Second Saturdays family programs, the Miami Art Museum (101 W. Flagler St.) presents Playful Poetry from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This event complements the museum’s main exhibit “Visual Poetics: Art and the World,” which addresses the interconnected aspects of representation and language. Of course the youngsters would rather dump the heavy discourse for a little creative anarchy, so MAM will encourage them to build a group collage from mixed media. At 2:00 p.m. in the auditorium, an expert will perform an interactive signing demonstration, teaching the kids how to form letters, words, and basic expressions with their hands — the ultimate blend of word and image.
