Stomp is musical theater like you’ve never seen it, and it’s coming to Miami. The vivacious troupe uses anything and everything — except traditional instruments — to make a beat: garbage cans, Zippo lighters, washboards, hubcaps, wooden poles, you name it. The result is a beautifully choreographed percussion spectacle that is both exuberant and disciplined.
The concept was created in the ’90s in the UK and has since become a worldwide sensation. So what have the Stomp troupes been up to since then? They’ve collaborated with Jim Henson’s Muppets; they have their own IMAX film; “Stomp Avenue” in New York was commemoratively named in 2004; and a group performed with Paul Simon on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last year. It’s probably better to ask, “What haven’t the Stomp troupes been up to?”
For one week only, see what all the fuss is about. Stomp opens Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) and runs through December 9.
