Miami’s two powerhouse track selectors are arguably Cedric Gervais and DJ Irie. One is a French-born house-music demigod; the other is a hip-hop entrepreneur and the official Miami Heat DJ. But can the two still be successful behind the decks if things are shaken up a bit? LIV intends to find out Friday night with Flip Up. The concept is simple: Gervais will spin hip-hop while Irie takes on house music. They even have cutesy names appropriate for each genre: Ced G and Irie François. But if we may offer a word of advice: Cedric, the key to DJing hip-hop is keeping the energy high; house music gradually builds up, but hip-hip crowds won’t stand for it. Irie, we all know you love MCing during your sets, but it’s best if you turn off the mike for this one; house-heads want to hear the music, not you.
Witness these two DJs achieve new levels of greatness — or possible failure — under LIV’s domed roof. Cover is $20 for ladies and $30 for guys. Doors open at 11 p.m. for those ages 21 and older with ID. Call 305-674-4680 or visit livnightclub.com.
