When Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar was 8 years old, his parents sent him to a Catholic boarding school in a remote part of the county in the hopes he would become a priest. Instead, little Pedro grew up to be an openly gay film director whose characters — such as a lesbian drug addict mother superior, fetish-crazed pop star named Sexilia, and pre-op transsexual woman who impregnates a nun — have left their indelible mark on our fabulously twisted countercultural minds. Said Almodóvar about his time in the seminary, where he would frequently escape to the nearby movie theater: “Cinema became my real education, much more than the one I received from the priest.”
On Thursday, catch a free screening of Bad Education, Almodóvar’s 2004 drama that is set within the confines of religious education and touches on sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the lives of two childhood friends who eventually become lovers.
