Tons of new acts come to town during Art Basel Miami Beach, but one returning favorite is the Film sector. This year, curators David Gryn, the director of London’s Artprojx, and Zurich collector, This Brunner, embrace the theme of playfulness. The sector will present more than 80 films and videos by an international compilation of artists, whose works will screen at Miami Beach’s SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center.
Organizers announced this week that Brunner has selected Tim Burton’s Big Eyes for a special screening at the Colony Theatre, ahead of its national release on Christmas Day.

Big Eyes, starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, is a biopic about Walter and Margaret Keane, two once-married artists who rose to fame in the 1950s and ’60s, and the subsequent legal difficulties Margaret had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works. The film will screen on Friday, December 5, at 8:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Gyn’s program of film and video selections includes works by Charles Atlas, Martin Creed, Susan Hiller, Parker Ito, Mark Leckey, Babette Mangolte, Takeshi Murata, Laure Prouvost, Alex Prager, Mark Wallinger, and a tribute to Harun Farocki, who passed away this July. A highlight of the series will present Atlas’ 1986 film Ex Romance along with a new Miami Beach-specific edit of Parker Ito’s Wipeout XL.
In conjunction with the popular outdoor screenings in SoundScape Park, an extended film program will be presented within Art Basel’s newly designed film viewing room inside the Miami Beach Convention Center.
