Although we understand that not every headline will be a Pulitzer Prize contender, we expect journalists to seek out stories that inform readers about events affecting them or their communities. So when a respected news outlet publishes a story about why an A-list actress changed her foot spray, it’s clear to see how it could end in ridicule.
The Miami Herald is learning just that after posting a story titled “Scarlett Johansson changed her magnesium supplement routine after a spray left her feet feeling dry” to X over the weekend. The story left people scratching their heads (and others laughing theirs off), with many wondering what the Miami connection is. But with Johansson and her skincare brand, The Outset, based in New York City, this might actually be the first time a story has no Miami connection.
The reporting answers hard-hitting questions on Miami minds like “What is ScarJo’s magnesium routine for sleep? Does magnesium help with sleep and recovery according to ScarJo? What form of magnesium does ScarJo use?” and “What other supplements does ScarJo take?”
Many were quick to point out the peculiarity of this story appearing in The Herald.
“People are acting like this information is useless. I would like to see more stories about Scarlett Johansson’s feet in the news,” one user wrote.
“It’s okay to just say ‘there’s no news today,'” reads the most-seen comment with about 171,000 views.
“I was actually just wondering if Scarlett Johansson changed her magnesium supplement routine after a spray left her feeling dry,” one wrote sarcastically.
“Since 1903. Winner of 24 Pulitzer Prizes -@MiamiHerald. Get ready for #25 on those Pulitzer Prizes after this hard-hitting report. The world is forever changed,” another wrote.
Some were too devastated by the headline to read the actual article.
“Can’t read this because living in a world where a spray leaves Scarlett Johansson’s feet feeling dry is almost too much to endure. Stay safe, SJ,” one user wrote.
Others took a chance at a drive-by shot at her husband.
“Are we sure she wasn’t feeling dry from watching her husband on SNL?” The user asked, referring to Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost.
Miami Herald didn’t respond to New Times’ email seeking comment.
