Though there is plenty of competition, the ongoing Thursday night series at the Pérez Art Museum of Miami (PAMM) is among the most consistently magical evenings in the city: Not only do the museum galleries and café stay open an extra three hours, but the waterfront terrace overlooking Biscayne Bay opens up to live music and cultural activations ranging from figure drawing and yoga to book speed dating and floating films projected onto a waterborne 60-foot screen.
This Thursday, the museum kicks off its fall PAMMSonic DJ series with a free performance by Hong Kong DJ, producer, and cultural researcher Gia Fu, whose National Hispanic Heritage Month set will lean heavily on her “deep-rooted work in Afro-Latin music, particularly salsa and its associated rhythms.” (Some may also remember Fu as the opener on Marc Anthony’s sold-out 2023 Viviendo tour dates.)
The cultural fusion is par for the course for Fu, who also spearheads the multidisciplinary Canton Mambo project, which connects communities through “music, dance, and cultural exchange.” Bonus: Fu’s 7-9 p.m. set will be preceded by a 6 p.m. guided Pride tour inside the museum and happy hour specials at the Verde café.
PAMMSonic continues October 23 with international DJ Walshy Fire, who will perform a set of reggae, dancehall, and Afro-diasporic beats after a book launch for Lee Jaffe, whose Hit Me with the Music details his life and times on the road with Bob Marley and the Wailers.
“Really excited to be a part of PAMMSonic as I love seeing music being played in non-traditional settings like a museum!” DJ Walshy Fire tells New Times. “It’s so refreshing for artists like myself who are inspired by my environment. Excited to see what PAMM will bring out during my set.”
The series closes out on November 13 with a celebration of the opening of the Woody De Othello: coming forth by day exhibit and a performance by Paperwater who promises to “blend genres, push sonic boundaries, and create a vibe that’s all about movement and connection.”
“We are excited for DJ Gia Fu, DJ Walshy Fire, and Paperwater to bring their high-energy sounds to PAMM visitors and come together in a celebration of sonic diversity across the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond,” Franklin Sirmans, the Sandra and Tony Tamer director at PAMM, says.
PAMM also promises “surprise pop-ups and special guests that will make every night unforgettable”—so, you know, good to great.
