The Miami Dolphins recently switched from Reebok to Nike uniforms, and the minimal changes unveiled earlier this week for the 2012 kits were mostly all in the details. Though, come 2013 the Dolphins uniform change may be a bit more drastic. The team is reportedly considering updating its logo. It’s a mark that has remained relatively unchanged since the team was founded.

“I don’t think you’d ever see us consider something as radical as Tampa Bay did going from the orange to the pewter gray … but I think we’re actively looking at ways to keep the brand current while respecting the great tradition and iconic value that we’ve been fortunate to inherit,” team CEO Mike Dee told the Sun-Sentinel.

Don’t worry about any Marlins-level complete rebranding, though.

“We’re not looking to enact any radical changes. … We will keep great respect of the history and tradition of the logo and the look and feel of the team. That is not going to change under any circumstances.”

The Dolphins’ aesthetics have remained pretty steady over the years.

The Dolphins logo, an actual dolphin with a football helmet in front of a sunburst, debuted with the team in 1996. The dolphin originally kept its head towards the middle of the circle, but by the 70’s the dolphins had jumped up a little bit further. In 1997 the team kept the same basic scheme but gave the dolphin a well deserved modernist makeover.

Hopefully whatever changes are made are in the spirit of that 1997 makeover.

The Dolphin’s uniform, meanwhile, has kept the same basic feel throughout its history, and most of the changes made reflect changes made to uniforms league-wide. Though a bit of navy detailing was added in 1997.
