It’s not your average prodigal son story.
When exotic dancer Jessica “Jesse” Brown discovers that her father- — the head of one of the oldest and most respected churches in Atlanta — is terminally-ill, she returns home to a family who doesn’t want her back. Except her father, who tells her his dying wish is that she take over the helm at Mount Olive Baptist Church.
As we all know, the “Christian” thing for the church to do would be to accept her back, no questions asked, but of course, churches are populated by humans, not gods.
The film, which screens tonight at 8 p.m. at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), is the centerpiece of this year’s American Black Film Festival. The ABFF was founded in 1997 as a catalyst for the black film-making community and comes to Miami this year with a hefty list of celebrities, including D.L. Hughley, John Singleton, Michael Jai White, Robert Townsend, and Eriq LaSalle.
