Coral Gables took the phrase “be the first kid on your block” seriously yesterday, when thousands of people turned out on a muggy afternoon to get in line for a first bite of Shake Shack‘s burgers, cheese fries, and concretes.

The Gables outpost opened its doors to the public Sunday, July 16, at 11 a.m. to an immediate line of loyal burger fans and curious locals wanting a bite.

Service was brisk all day at the new Shack, which seats about 100 patrons inside and 60 on the patio. Employees were sent outside to helpfully control traffic in the parking lot and point out spaces to drivers pulling in for restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Shack burgers ($4.80 for a single, $7.35 for a double), flat-top dogs ($3 and up), and fries ($2.70).

Right in the midst of dinner rush, around 7 p.m., a storm knocked out

power for a minute, causing the need for a full reboot of the POS

system. While the line snaked out into the street, employees quickly

sprung into action, handing out samples of cheese fries, shakes, drinks,

and concretes.

No one seemed to mind the minimum 30-minute wait, however. A group of students trying the fare for the first time summed it up best. Despite the lines, their burgers and shakes were “amazing.”

Shake Shack Coral Gables is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight.
