Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Philadelphia restaurateur Michael Solomonov will open a branch of his Federal Donuts in the 250 Wynwood building, according to a news release from property owner Thor Equities.
Solomonov, who won a James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2011 and most recently for his cookbook Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking, is among a new vanguard of chefs such as New Orleans’ Alon Shaya and London’s Yotam Ottolonghi, giving Israeli food its proper due. His fledgling empire also includes Percy Street Barbecue, along with Israeli restaurants Zahav and Dizengoff.
Though rumors have swirled that Solomonov would bring Zahav to Miami, Federal – beloved for its irresistible combination of donuts, fried chicken, and coffee – will be his first flag in heavily Jewish South Florida. Federal opened in Philadelphia in 2011 and quickly catapulted into the heights of the city’s favorite restaurants. Its fast rise was well documented last year in an Eater feature.
And Federal’s success seemed to put it in the perfect position to expand across the nation. A Nashville location was announced yesterday.
