We can only imagine the wacky stuff people try to get through customs at Miami International Airport, but a 3,000-year-old sarcophagus certainly stands out.
The fancy ancient Egyptian coffin belonged to a fellow named Imesy sometime around 1,000 B.C. but was stolen from Egypt in 1884. After being put on display in Madrid in 2007, the sarcophagus made its way to MIA in October 2008, but the importer couldn’t prove he owned it.
Egypt sued last year to have the coffin returned, and an antiquities official will fly to the States in March to recover the stolen property.
