Carlos Bertonatti will have to wait a few more months to face trial on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter after a judge granted his lawyer’s motion for a continuance this morning.
At an 8:30 hearing, Judge David Miller rescheduled Bertonatti’s trial to begin on August 2.
Police say that Bertonatti was drunk on January 17 when he slammed into 44-year-old cyclist Christophe Le Canne on the Bear Cut Bridge near Key Biscayne, killing Le Canne instantly.
Bertonatti, an aspiring singer and wealthy member of a troubled Key Biscayne family, led police on a brief chase through Key Biscayne while dragging Le Canne’s bike under his car.
Bertonatti has pled not guilty to charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
He’s still incarcerated, the result of his $250,000 bond getting revoked when prosecutors discovered he’d lied about owning multiple passports.
