The World/Inferno Friendship Society is a punk cabaret ensemble. (The word ensemble not used lightly as the band can sometimes swell up to a dozen members.) And it has nurtured an international cult following that goes back to the early ’90s.

World Inferno, a common abbreviation for the group’s lengthy name, are at the center of a curious ven diagram that overlaps punk context with sophisticate cabaret aesthetic and world music stomp.

In a way, it is a sleeper precursor to the current wave of circus-related punk variants as well as genres like “gypsy punk.” In turn, there’s no denying the influence of Oingo Boingo’s Danny Elfman on the Inferno’s master of ceremonies, Jack Terricloth, though Terricloth does add his own debonair imprint to the character.
