Anthony Mangione, the chief of the the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s South Florida department, was arrested today on charges related to child pornography. Mangione had been suspended in April after federal investigators found images of child porn on his computer in his Broward County home. A summer-long investigation led to today’s arrest.
The Miami Herald reports the investigation began when four images of child pornography where sent to Mangione’s AOL email address on his home computer. Back in April, investigators searched his home and seized his computer. The charges might have grown in scope, but the exact charges have been sealed. They will likely be made public when Mangione is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow.
The FBI was tipped off to Mangione’s Internet activity by AOL, which monitors any activity made by its users that might involve child pornography. The investigation looked into Mangione’s role in either sending, receiving, or distributing the obscene images. Today’s arrest signals that he is suspected of doing more than just innocently receiving the images.
Mangione is being held at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office jail in the meantime. As the chief of Miami’s ICE office, Mangione often publicly spoke out against child pornography and cheered his office’s role in policing it.
