After a search that lasted over a year, the Wolfsonian-FIU has announced it has hired Timothy Rodgers as their new director. His appointment officially begins on July 1.
Rodgers comes to FIU from the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), where he served as Director for the past six years. He also has a background in higher education, serving as a visiting professor of contemporary art and theory at the College of Santa Fe from 2005-2008.
Rodgers’ appointment comes at a pivotal time for the museum, thanks to a recent award of a $5 million, 5-year grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The grant was designed to support greater public access to the museum’s collection of art and design, particularly through the enhancement of its online offerings.
In addition to making most of the museum’s permanent collection available online, Rodgers hopes to expand the physical museum, as well, allowing more of the permanent collection to be on display.
Former Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff stepped down in April 2014, after nearly twenty years in the post.
The Wolfsonian–FIU is a museum, library, and research center devoted to art and design, with a collection of about 120,000 objects from the period 1885–1945. The collection includes a variety of media, from furniture and art to rare books and propaganda posters.
