What the hell is a singjay? Good question. A singjay is a reggae musician who combines a “traditional” type of singing with a rhythmic, monotone chanting.Ripton Joseph Hylton, a.k.a. Eek-a-Mouse is one of the first and biggest artist to popularize the style. What’s even cooler, according to IMDB, Hylton played Fat Smitty in New Jack City. Sure he hasn’t released an original album since 2004’s Eek-A-Speeka, but he’s slowly building an international audience thanks to incessant touring. On September 26, he’ll be making a stop at Culture Room to sing songs about how much he loves week to an adoring crowd of like minded thinkers. Tickets go on sale on August 24 through Ticketmaster. I’ll see you there.
