Miami’s School for Advanced Studies has finally cracked the top ten of Newsweek’s annual America’s Best High School list, coming in at sixth this year. That would make it Florida’s second-best public high school amongst a top ten list that is surprisingly Sunshine State heavy.
Here’s this year’s top ten.
SAS operates from four Miami-Dade College campuses, and allows students to earn college credits while in high school. Last year the school ranked 12th on the list.
Newsweek compiles the list by considering six factors: graduation rate (25 percent), college acceptance rate (25 percent), AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and percent of students enrolled in at least one AP/IB/AICE course (5 percent).
Five other Miami-Dade High Schools also made the top 200. Archimedean Upper Conservatory came in at number 54, MAST Academy was 76th, Coral Reef Senior High was 109th, Young Women’s Preparatory Academy was 110th and Design and Architecture Senior High was 149th. All in all, 24 Miami-Dade schools made the top 2,000 list out of the more than 30,000 high schools that were evaluated.
