Teddy Bridgewater Commits to Louisville, Spurning Canes

Al Golden has only been in charge of the Miami Hurricanes for a week, and he’s already lost a major recruiting battle. Teddy Bridgewater, the quarterback for Miami Northwestern and rated the number two best quarterback prospect in the country by Rivals.com, has committed to the University of Louisville. Bridgewater had originally orally committed to the Miami Hurricanes, but decommitted shortly after the team fired head coach Randy Shannon. Eli Rogers, Bridgewater’s Northwestern teammate, has also chosen Louisville over Miami.

Bridgewater’s mother and uncle had attended high school with Shannon, and he apparently had a close bond with the coach. Once Shannon got the pink slip, Bridgewater pulled his oral commitment.

He made a recruiting visit to Miami this weekend, but apparently wasn’t impressed with the program under Golden.

Instead he’ll join Charlie Strong at Louisville. The Miami Herald confirmed the move with Bridgewater’s mother.

Strong, the former defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators, has started to turn the Cardinals around in his first season. Though, he only mustered a 6-6 regular season in the relatively weak Big East.

Bridgewater and Roger’s reversal is a major loss for the program. Miami Northwestern was one of the ‘Canes most valuable pipelines. Jacory Harris and many other current players are Northwestern grads.

Golden did pick up his first recruit over the weekend. He’s convinced Olsen Pierre, who had recruited to play at Temple, to join him in Coral Gables.

This may be a shaky year for recruiting. Though, the ‘Canes only have a limited number of spots on the roster for recruits. Golden may have to prove himself in order to make inroads in Florida’s recruiting grounds. Luckily, thanks to the hard work of Shannon and his staff, he already has more than enough young talent to make a splash next season. The future of the program may depend on it.
