If the results are any indication, Hilda Caballero Diaz-Balart was a supermom. Her sons Lincoln and Mario grew up to become congressmen. Her son Rafael is a banker, and her other son Jose is the main national news anchor for Telemundo.
The Cuban matriarch passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 88.
Mrs. Diaz-Balart was born at the Stewart Sugar Mill in the province of Camagüey, Cuba, on November 18, 1924. She married Rafael Diaz-Balart, a powerful politician in Batista-era Cuba who went on to found one of the first anti-Castro organizations in Cuba. The family escaped to South Florida in 1960.
Mr. Diaz-Balart had previously passed away after a battle with leukemia in 2005.
“A Mass of the Resurrection will be held in her memory on Friday, September 13, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter & Paul Church, located at 900 SW 26th Road in Miami, Florida,” according to a release sent out by the family.
