Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen made history yesterday by making the first (semi-) authorized Tweet from the House Chamber of the U.S. Congress. The Republican congresswoman, whose Twitter is usually full of rooting for local football teams, live Tweeted a picture of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi handing over the gavel to new Speaker John Boehner. Previously, the use of electronic devices, like smart phones, on the house floor was banned, but a new rule (which technically hasn’t been approved yet) allows them. That opens the way for live-Tweeting from the House floor.
Here’s Ros-Lehtinen’s historic tweet, and here’s the picture attached:
“Ros-Lehtinen was the only lawmaker to obviously tweet from the floor, due to the picture she included,” The Hill. “Other members’ Twitter accounts were active during this afternoon’s swearing-in, though it wasn’t necessarily clear whether lawmakers themselves or staff members off the floor were updating the accounts.”
Ugh, this could mean a new era of even more annoying Congressmen Twitter accounts. Ros-Lehtinen’s is far from annoying, but some of her colleagues on both sides of the aisle just have awful, awful Twitters. Nasty little things.
Anyway, do you think Frederica Wilson could get one of her hats classified as a small electronic device so she could wear one in the House?
