Yesterday we posted a blog about University of Miami administrators not allowing Back/Slash magazine on campus. Now, staffers from another paper say there’s more to the story. Chelsea Matiash, editor in chief of the school paper The Hurricane, contends distributors of the college lifestyle magazine didn’t play by the rules when it came to competition between publications. She says distributors sometimes used The Hurricane newspaper racks to circulate the magazine.
Matiash writes:
“Mr. McCormick was not banned because we don’t like competition. He was banned because he has disdain for authority and did not want to follow the rules of posting publications on campus. They placed their magazines in the newspapers bins, that the newspaper paid for and applied to have on campus. Distraction, another campus magazine, has been embraced by the newspaper and works with them. The newspaper isn’t afraid of competition. We are sick of him piggybacking off of other publications. If he had followed procedures, there would be no such ban.”
