Regrettably, we lost our original, mint-condition copy of Starslayer #2 — also known as the first appearance of the Rocketeer — in a winner-take-all game of pogs. The torpedo backfired and — poof — every geeky thing we owned disappeared. To fill the emptiness, we window-shop every month at the BTL Collectibles Show, South Florida’s only Comic Con-like trade show.
Organized by Orlando Pabellon, the BTL Collectibles Show has attracted thousands of nerds to Miccosukee Resort & Gaming since it started about 11 years ago, and unlike other events of its kind, it knows what women want.
“It’s cool for girls to be into this nerd stuff now,” Pabellon says. “I like to accommodate everyone.” While many female attendees truly dig the comic culture, others are there to support their nerdy significant others. That’s why Pabellon’s shows include handcrafted jewelry makers and organic soap producers, in addition to comic book vendors, sports memorabilia dealers, and yes, even Bronies. “I don’t do such a heavy, specific Brony thing, but yes, we do have My Little Pony collectibles.”
The BTL Collectibles Show takes place this Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and all ages are welcome. Visit facebook.com/btlshow.
