South Florida leads the world in many areas — most notably as a place to party. Sadly, though, it also takes the lead in a less-acknowledged area. Miami is an international destination for sex trafficking, a crime that is often confined to the shadows and brings shame and isolation to its victims. Author Lydia Cacho is trying to change that. Her shocking exposé, Slavery Inc.: The Untold Story of International Sex Trafficking, is an unflinching look at an insidious industry that specializes in the trade of human cargo. The story is told through interviews with those who are intrinsically involved — the pimps, prostitutes, criminals, innocents, and exploited. In uncovering the sordid details of these illicit and inhumane activities, Cacho ventures into realms with similar criminal connections: drug dealing, arms smuggling, money laundering, internet pornography, and international terrorism. Aside from being an award-winning writer and journalist, she has also won praise as a crusader for the cause of human dignity, championing those who have fallen prey to these crimes.
