Two years ago, in October 2011, the nonprofit Hand in Hand for Haiti opened the doors of the Lycée Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable School in Saint-Marc, Haiti. Since then, the organization has organized 5K walk/runs to raise money to benefit the school, which is funded solely by donations. Marking its third year, the 5K Walk/Run for Haiti will take place at the beautiful Zoo Miami (12400 SW 152nd St., Miami). The Saint-Marc private school is able to offer two meals a day for about 250 students. Each year, Hand in Hand for Haiti vows to add a new class, but that cannot be done without proper fundraising. Help make a difference in a child’s life by simply walking around the zoo — there’s not much more to it. Wake up bright and early to get to Zoo Miami at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registration costs $30 onsite and includes participation in the 5K as well as a commemorative T-shirt. After you’ve completed your three-mile run (or walk), enjoy the rest of the day strolling around the zoo and taking in the wildlife.
