What do Wolverine, Wale, and Hillary Clinton have in common? Nigeria, and not because they fell victim to email fraud. Whether it’s getting visited by ex-first ladies, appearing in Hollywood films, or producing up-and-coming rappers, the African nation is hot right now. This year marks the country’s 49th year of independence, so to celebrate, Kech This Inc. will throw a party, Naija for Life, at Kitchen 305.
“I’m inviting people who are interested in the whole Nigerian craze to come see how we party,” says Kech This’s Kechi Okpala. Do the awilo (“It’s like the African electric slide,” Okpala says) while listening to the sounds of Makosa, reggae, and Afro-hip-hop from DJs Debo, Self Born, and Onyeka. Get your ten-dollar advance tickets at Sherri Nigerian Restaurant (16595 NW 27th Ave., Miami), or pay $15 at the door. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Nigerian Red Cross’s motherless babies project.
