Every time Stephen Colbert goes home to South Carolina, he becomes an elderly black woman named Shirley. At least that was his shtick at Second City’s 50th anniversary reunion show, where he and other alumni got back to their sketch comedy roots.
Often called the “Harvard of humor,” the Chicago improv comedy troupe has launched the careers of everyone from Joan Rivers and Bill Murray to Tina Fey and Steve Carell. Considering such mass production of comic genius, we’re a little suspicious that they’re not all robots sporting highly advanced wisecrack technology.
Created for the company’s Miami debut, Second City: Loco in El Show Mas Funny comes to the Carnival Studio Theater this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and runs through March 28. The sketches, canciones, and improvisation will be in Spanglish, paying tribute to America’s first bilingual situation comedy, ¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.?
