Almost 30 years ago, Marc Joseph was a health counselor who worked with refugees at the Krome Detention Center in Southwest Miami-Dade. After one of the distraught detainees hanged himself, Joseph, also an accomplished musician, wrote the reggae-infused protest song “Refugee” for his band. Twenty years later, the same detainee inspired Joseph to write the full-length Refugee: A Musical of Freedom and Resistance, in which Ludovic, a singer of protest songs, escapes Haiti’s political oppression only to find more turmoil on U.S. shores. Performed in English and Kreyol by a cast of 12, the performance is accompanied by Joseph’s roots/rock/hip-hop band, Ayabonmbe.
Refugee premiered in 2007 as part of Miami Light Project’s Miami Made program, and it returns to the stage this weekend at the Little Haiti Cultural Center to raise funds for the Haiti Rebuilding Project. See Refugee this Friday through Sunday.
