Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You
We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
Your Midwestern kin have 26 hours to kill before their cruise ship coasts out of the Port of Miami and on to a place where you don’t have to watch Aunt Esther’s toenail-trimming sessions live and in person. They’ve grown tired of Big Pink’s head-size waffles and are bowing to the recession by hovering around your 12-inch boob tube, so the entertainment must be plentiful and pocket-friendly. A foolproof nighttime destination with absolutely no cover and plenty of music loud enough to drown out Cousin Lexie’s tales of boyfriend woes is Deco Fridays at the Lounge. The Shelborne Hotel is blasting back onto the nightlife scene with its revamped lounge area and a weekly throwdown hosted by SoBe scenester Talmage Thornhill. Each Friday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., gratis hors d’oeuvres and specially priced booze will mix and mingle with tunes floating from the DJ booth, plus Thornhill’s birthday is this week — and this ain’t no sweet 16. DJs Satan and Stephanie will spin the beats; just make sure Aunt Esther keeps the chicken dance to a minimum.
