Search your brain for every little thing you know about acoustic guitars. Gather it all into a pile: the stereotypes of hippies and folk music and fifth-year college seniors seducing freshman girls on the quad. Don’t leave out the sleepy, bored sensation you get when you hear acoustic guitar music.
Now that you’ve piled it all up, torch that shit in a big, crazy bonfire. Rodrigo y Gabriela are coming back to town, so you no longer have any use for it.
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero make music that’s equal parts thrash metal and flamenco. It’s just the two of them up there with their guitars, but the sounds they produce will make you want to bang your head like it’s the ’90s in Mexico. The last time they came through Miami, they brought a heavy-metal-style light show with them, flooding the stage with flashing bulbs that are typically reserved for rock stars, not folk musicians. The cool thing about Rod y Gab is that they’re both and neither at the same time.
