Have you seen Victory? Of course you have; it’s the quintessential European sports-meets-Nazi fighting genre film classic. But let us refresh your memory: There’s Sylvester Stallone, in the hilariously unbelievable role of prisoner of war-turned-soccer player, Capt. Robert Hatch. He and a team of other POWs agree to play against the Nazi team as underdogs in a propaganda match, but — spoiler alert — they beat the odds and score a giant victory against soccer-loving sympathizers everywhere. We’re pretty sure that nowadays the movie is played exclusively on European cable stations and, even then, only in the wee hours of the morning. It is that embarrassing.
Luckily, here in the ol’ U.S.A., we have a real Stallone sports classic: Rocky. Though the Italian Stallion tried his best to tarnish the legacy of this film about a small-time boxer who makes it big with interminable sequels, Rocky has stood the test of time.
