Now 24/7

There’s only one sport that reigns supreme in Miami: football. That hosanna of hut-ones and hut-twos you’re hearing is the beginning, finally, of a new season of play. While the big-time version grabs all the attention (Dolphins quarterbacks Jay Fiedler and Brian Griese dueling for the helm, the Hurricanes recovering from being robbed — ROBBED — of a national title), our city’s passion for football may be best evident on the slapdash gridirons painted on the grass of public parks from Homestead to Carol City. Miami’s youth football leagues are credited (even thanked) by Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden for generating all the talent we supply to college and pro teams.

Saturdays are day-long barbecue-and-music festivals as teams cycle through different age and weight divisions. Two primary leagues thrive in Miami: Pop Warner, where teams play their way to the national championship in Orlando; and the Orange Bowl Football League, whose players battle for the chance to play their title games on the field of Miami’s historic stadium. The same field where the Hurricanes should be defending a national title. And where another Griese once led the Dolphins. Camp gets X-treme

Dude, check this out! A camp dedicated to skateboards and PlayStation, and no stupid camp songs. Sounds like a 12-year-old’s dream come true, which is what the Edgewise Adventure Sport Camp is all about. The day camp at Peacock Park (2820 McFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove) offers skate ramps, long boards, and mountain boards, with an inline hockey rink and kayaking. And then there’s the chill center to play video games and learn videography skills to film your friends’ stunts. It’s all taught by experienced coaches and guest pros. Camp is from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through Friday, August 29. Cost is $225/week. Call 786-290-5150. — By John Anderson
