Plain Jane Automobile

Major radio stations are not exactly a goldmine of local indie talent. Ruthlessly focused on the bottom line, most stick to Top 40 acts supported by major labels — as if Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake don’t get enough exposure already.

It is a wonder, then, that Orlando quartet Plain Jane Automobile — a virtually unheard-of band with no label deal — got its start on commercial powerhouse O-Rock (WOCL 105.9-FM). The foursome’s anthemic single “Close My Eyes” was placed on regular rotation by the station’s head honchos, based purely on merit. Imagine that.

This isn’t the only major accomplishment the group has attained. PJA also won the 2005 Disc Makers Independent Music World Series for the Southeast region. Although the award is specifically designated for indie bands, PJA is working to shed its underground status. The O-town boys are on the right track with a rock-pop sound that recalls Radiohead and Coldplay. Duke Crider’s powerhouse vocals ride atop the churning chords of guitarist Luis Mejia, while Paul McCorkell on bass and James Dickens on drums drive the tempo. The band has released a self-titled EP, with a full-length disc to come. For now, fans will have to settle for PJA’s energetic live show.
