In contrast to the dark, murky, percussive house that dominates the Miami dance scene, Q-Burns Abstract Message, who splits his time between Orlando (where he runs Eighth Dimension Records) and San Francisco, makes soulfully sunny house beats that are perfect for an afternoon party. A new compilation of remixes, Future Past Tense, shows him at his best. Its highlights are many, from the peppy, jaunty flashdance that bubbles throughout his remake of Rabbit in the Moon’s “Floori.D.A.” to the groovy sing-along that is his remix of Fila Brazilia’s “We Build Arks.” Unrepentantly bright and blissed-out, listening to Future Past Tense is much more fun than stumbling around a cavernous nightclub.
