Gay Miami puts on a show

SUN 1/11

Freedom isn't free. It requires vigilance 24/7. SAVE Dade, queer Miami's political front, will be hosting its annual fundraising Lambda Showcase

with an array of homegrown talent. Singing group the Rough Riders will perform a madcap version of Moulin Rouge. Rocker mama Bev McLellan will be jamming and golden-toned David Vance croons. With stints from the New World Symphony Ensemble and the South Beach Gay Men's Chorus, the production shows off Miami's diverse pool of queer talent. Curtain is at 7:00 p.m. at the Shores Performing Arts Theater, 9806 NE 2nd Ave., Miami Shores. Tickets cost $20 and $50 with cocktail reception. Call 305-751-7283. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez

City Strife

SAT 1/10 In conjunction with the art exhibition "Urban Recipes," the folks over at Rocket Projects (3440 N. Miami Ave.) have posed this weighty question: "How often do we look at our surroundings and listen to what they tell us?" Our answer: Every single day, and the message we're hearing is to get the hell out of here because despite the prospect of overpriced latte joints and trendy boutiques on every corner, we're going to be surrounded by a wall of upscale condos and insufferable yuppies sooner than later! Artists and Miami natives Michael Loveland, Josh Levine, and Raymond Saá might hear something different. The only way you'll find out is if you go to the gallery and take in their installation featuring drawing, sculpture, digital photography, and video surveillance. The show opens tonight at 7:00 (they'll chat about it at 6:00) and runs through Saturday, February 28. Admission is free. Call 305-576-6082. -- By Nina KormanMovies

Homegrown Film Fest

WED 1/14 The Made in Miami Film & Video Festival, where the only criteria for entry is that the film is made in our own back yard, might just be future filmmakers' first opportunity to shine. With 22 screenings of both features and shorts over 11 nights, it seems our local auteurs have been busy. Showtimes vary with screenings at Tower Theater, 1508 SW 8th St., and Coconut Grove Cinema Under the Stars at the historic Coast Guard seaplane hangar, 2600 Bayshore Dr. Call 305-751-7001 or www.madeinmiami.org . -- By John Anderson
