Trinidad’s carnival is an extremely visual celebration — everywhere you look, scantily clad women are drenched in glitter and sweat, while grown men are wearing bright feathered headdresses. But what propels the unflagging festivity ever forward is the music. Soca music’s speeded-up, syncopated beats require a minute of adjustment for foreign ears, but once the rhythm corresponds with your inner metronome, you can’t help but dance. Take tonight’s Soca Extreme album release party as an introduction to the genre. Hosted by the irrepressible Mixx-96 FM and the infamous Trini South Boyz clique, the combination of live performances and hot DJs will make the crowd sweat all night long. Trinidad’s Bunji Garlin and Shurwayne Winchester will make the ladies scream, and the exhortations of Barbados’ original sex kitten, Alyson Hinds, will amaze the men in the audience.
