Coconut Grove will go to the mattresses as the neighborhood celebrates its annual Labor Day weekend pajama party, anchored by the Great Grove Bed Race this Sunday.
The race has been around for several years, and participants have pretty much fine-tuned the drill: Five-member teams in costume race homemade beds on wheels along Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove. And it’s all for a good cause. This year, proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.
So, you snooze, you lose? Not necessarily.
The Great Grove Bed Race is an all-day affair, beginning at 1 p.m. with a bed parade on Commodore Plaza. The race begins at 2 at the corner of Commodore and Grand and is followed by a block party on Fuller Street with live music, drink specials, and winning beds on display. Bed-race victors will be awarded not only for speed but also for theme and décor at 5 p.m. The charitable nonsense will conclude with an “Up Past Bedtime” Family Pajama Party screening of the animated film The Tale of Despereaux at 8 p.m. at the Barnacle State Park (3485 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove).

Sun., Sept. 2, 1 p.m., 2012
