After Julia Roberts was outted as a knitter, the A list of celebrities who clicked their needles grew as long as the stack of knitting books and kits at Barnes & Noble. Knitting became the new yoga, and crafts were suddenly cool again. Years later, the do-it-yourself scarf and afghan phenomenon shows no sign of fraying. Some devotees love it for its calming effects, but many get hooked on the social aspect. Whether you’ve always wondered about the secret meaning of “knit one, purl one,” or you are a mitten-making master, get crafty at the Yarn It! Lounge at ArtCenter/South Florida today from 1 to 4.
Listen to music, eat treats, and drink Starbucks coffee while you knit, crochet, needlepoint, and embroider. There will be some materials available to practice with, and local fiber artist Kerry Phillips will offer professional tips, so even if you’ve never picked up a ball of yarn, you can come by and learn. Suggested donation is $10. Call 305-674-8278 ext. 15 to RSVP, or visit www.artcentersf.org for more information.
