President Obama has officially nominated a candidate to take over as U.S. attorney in the Southern District of Florida: former Janet Reno aide Wilfredo Ferrer.

Ferrer, who currently works for Miami-Dade County, becomes the first Cuban-American lawyer nominated by a Democrat to the slot. He’ll need confirmation from the Senate before he can take over.

Ferrer worked as deputy chief of staff under Reno, and apparently made quite an impression. How’s this for an endorsement, in Jay Weaver’s story in the Herald this afternoon:

“First of all, he understood better than anybody I’ve worked with how the federal government works with local and state governments, ” Reno said. “If I wanted to write the book about how to be the U.S. attorney, Willy would be one of my models.”
