Activities involving animals, food and children’s hands are bound to end in some gnarly bite wounds every once in a while.

While a Georgia family was visiting Sea World in Orlando, 8-year-old Jillian Thomas ended up getting bit by a dolphin during a the park’s dolphin feeding exhibit.

Guests are given a paper plate full of fish to toss in the dolphins’ mouth, but are warned not to lift up the paper plate itself. Of course, young children are not usually noted for the ability to follow directions, and when Jillian lifts up the plate to tell her mom she’s out of fish a dolphin pops up out of the water to grab the plate, and in the process bites the girl’s hand.

Sea World released the following statement:

Educators and animal care staff were at the attraction when this happened and immediately connected with the family. In addition, a member of our health services team was in the area at Dolphin Cove and quickly responded and treated the young girl.

The video had not been previously shared with us and we have not had a chance to assess it, but certainly take the situation seriously.”
